Early Silage Making-20160322-001.JPG
Early Start To The Silage Season....Contractor Walter Moroney making silage bales, with a Mc Hale Fusion baler, on the farm of Fintan Moloney at Silvergrove, O Callaghan's Mills on Tuesday 22nd March. The cut was of Red Clover variety which is high in feed value, protein and minerals and while it is only suitable for silage making and not for grazing, it can be harvested up to four times a year. The crop, which yields approximately twenty five bales per acre per year, gets no artificial fertiliser but has slurry spread on it after each cut to drive it. Photograph by John Kelly.
